I reached out to Tom Spiggle, who heads up an eponymous Arlington law firm that specializes in employment rights. Here’s what he said, edited for space and clarity, about how companies can do a better job preventing workplace harassment.
Studies have shown traditional programs can backfire, so what kind of training actually works? Most of what I’ve seen have been the traditional programs. I’ve seen ones that are very good in that the training is regular, the reporting requirements seem to be real, there seems to be real enforcement — or at least real follow-up — when people make reports, internal hotlines. There are some that I’ve heard about that are more collaborative, where the employees themselves are involved in coming up with the reporting process.
